How to choose your solar panels from G Store

When selecting Solar panels for your solar power system, you should be aware of the different types currently available:

  • Polycrystalline (sometimes called multi-crystalline) silicon
  • Monocrystalline silicon
  • Amorphous (sometimes called thin-film) silicon.

The Polycrystalline silicon panel is the most popular type of solar panel. It combines a good efficiency level with good value for money.

Monocrystalline silicon panels are the most efficient and most expensive panels. If you are looking for panels which produce the most solar power in the smallest area, Monocrystalline panels would be the choice.

Amorphous silicon panels use the least amount of silicon. They are the least efficient of the three. They take up the most space to produce the same power. They may suit a budget system, but you should consider their expansion capability. These panels are partially shade tolerant and can operate marginally more effectively in hotter climates.

Solar Panel Size
Solar panel size is usually expressed in Watts - describing the amount of electricity a panel can produce in 1 hour under ideal conditions. Thus, a 210Watt solar panel should produce 210 Watts of electricity each hour, if conditions are ideal. Pertinent conditions include direction of the roof (north facing is the best), pitch of the roof and shading.

Apart from obviously ensuring that the home solar panels will fit on your roof area, you should take into account how much north-facing roof you have and if it is likely that you would want to expand your solar power system in the future. It may be a better strategy to buy fewer, more efficient panels at the outset, leaving room for expansion, rather than cheaper larger panels which would have to be replaced if the system were to be expanded.

Warranties
For peace of mind, it is preferable to choose a solar panel with a long term warranty. Since this warranty is provided by the manufacturer, you should choose a product brand which is well known and is likely to be around long term. At G Store, we sell quality panels such as Bosch, Hyundai and Suntech. They have a 25 year limited power output warranty and most also have a 10 year limited parts warranty. The warranties differ between brands, so it is important you speak to an expert retailer to ensure you get what you think you are paying for.
