Hot water – it’s an essential part of our daily lives, but it’s also a significant contributor to our energy bills. We all know it!

In fact, recent stats published by Your Home note that hot water systems account for about 21% of total energy use in the average Victorian home. With energy costs on the rise, it’s time to explore how you can take control of your energy expenses and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

The good news? The Victorian government is here to help with the Solar Homes Program, offering rebates that empower homeowners to make energy-efficient choices. The Solar Homes program also includes a rebate for eligible, energy-efficient heat pumps and hot water systems.

Let’s take a look at the detail now.

What is the Victorian Solar Homes Program?

The Solar Homes Program is a game-changer for Victorians. It’s all about supporting homeowners in taking charge of their energy bills, reducing their carbon footprint, and transitioning to renewable energy sources.

The program provides rebates to eligible Victorians, covering a range of energy-efficient solutions. These rebates aim to make the upfront costs of solar panel installations, solar battery systems, and hot water upgrades more affordable.

There are three main types of rebate available under the Solar Homes Program, including:

  • Solar panel rebate
  • Solar battery loans
  • Hot water rebate

The Victorian government hot water rebate of up to $1,000 is currently available on eligible heat pump and hot water systems. The government has also stated that rebates will remain at $1,000 for the 23-24 financial year.

For homeowners, there’s also an exciting opportunity to combine solar power with efficient hot water systems. Eligible households can benefit from both a solar panel (PV) rebate and a hot water rebate, essentially doubling their savings potential. This is a powerful approach to lowering energy costs and embracing sustainable practices.

Am I Eligible for the Victorian Hot Water Rebate?

If you’re a Victorian homeowner, you could be eligible for the hot water rebate if you meet these criteria:

  • You’re the owner-occupier of an existing property where the new hot water system will be installed
  • The combined household taxable income of all owners is less than $210,000 per year
  • You haven’t previously received a hot water rebate or a solar battery rebate under the Solar Homes Program
  • The property’s value is under $3 million
  • The property address hasn’t previously received a hot water rebate or a solar battery rebate under the program
  • The hot water system you’re replacing is at least three years old from the date of purchase

For all homeowners, it’s particularly important to note that the hot water rebate can’t be received more than once for a particular property.

Once you’ve determined your eligibility, you can dive into the application process.

How to apply for the Victorian hot water rebate

The journey towards an energy-efficient hot water system starts with obtaining a quote from an authorised hot water retailer. This quote is crucial for your eligibility process and will be used to confirm that the installation can proceed.

Note that it’s advised not to commit to any quote acceptance or deposit before receiving your rebate eligibility confirmation – this is important!

The application process varies slightly for new customers and existing customers.

New customers:

  • If you’re applying for a Solar Victoria rebate for the first time, you’ll need your quote number from an authorised hot water retailer, two forms of ID, and proof of income

Existing customers:

  • If you’ve already received a solar (PV) rebate, you’ll need your quote number and two forms of ID
  • After you’ve submitted your application, you’ll receive a confirmation email – if all required information is provided, your eligibility will be confirmed promptly

Once your eligibility is confirmed, you can move forward with arranging the installation through an authorised hot water retailer. The rebate will be paid directly to the retailer and deducted from your invoice, ensuring you only pay the remaining balance after the installation is complete.

How Much Can I Save by Installing an Energy-efficient Hot Water System?

Wondering how much you could save with an energy-efficient hot water system? On average, households that install solar hot water systems can expect to save between $240 to $800 per year on their electricity bills. This substantial reduction in energy expenses is a really compelling reason to consider upgrading your hot water system.

So – Where to from Here?

With the Solar Homes Program and hot water rebates, Victorians have a golden opportunity to make a positive impact on both their energy bills and the environment. By adopting solar hot water systems and energy-efficient alternatives, homeowners can take a significant step towards a cleaner, greener future.

At the end of the day, it’s not just about reducing costs; it’s about contributing to a more sustainable energy landscape for generations to come.

As hot water systems continue to drive energy consumption, it’s crucial to explore ways to lower energy costs and reduce environmental impact. The Solar Homes Program’s hot water rebates provide an excellent incentive for Victorians to make the switch to energy-efficient alternatives.

By combining solar power with efficient hot water systems, you’ll be able to unlock substantial savings while actively contributing to a more sustainable energy future. It’s time to take control of your energy bills and embrace a brighter, cleaner future for all Victorian.
