In a world where cleaner sources of energy and smarter solutions rush to the forefront of our global priorities, the Victorian government, in collaboration with the federal government, has taken strides towards a greener future.

Recognising the challenges faced by apartment owners and renters in accessing solar power, the Victorian government has just announced the Apartment Solar Grants program – a big win for apartment-owners and renters, with exciting incentives now available.

This groundbreaking initiative seeks to provide financial support and incentives for the installation of solar panels in apartment buildings, expanding access to renewable energy solutions.

In this article, we’ll delve into the specifics of this program, exploring its objectives, benefits, and implications for all of us living in Victoria.

What is the Apartment Solar Grants program in Victoria?

The Victorian government, in collaboration with the federal government, has unveiled an exciting initiative called the Apartment Solar Grants program. This program aims to expand access to solar power for apartment owners and renters across Victoria.

The driving force behind this exciting initiative is the recognition that around 65 percent of individuals residing in apartments in Victoria are renters. These renters often encounter challenges when attempting to secure support from property owners for the installation of solar panels.

To address this issue, the government has allocated over $16 million, with equal contributions from both state and federal authorities, to be administered by Solar Victoria.

How will the funds be allocated and utilised?

As per the other Victorian grants available in the realm of solar (more on this below), Solar Victoria will utilise the available funding to provide grants to owners’ corporations for up to $2,800 per apartment, with a maximum of 50 apartments per building.

This generous grant is double the existing $1,400 Victorian solar rebate available for standalone houses. The decision to double the subsidy was largely the result of the federal government matching the state’s commitment, showcasing joint dedication to sustainable energy solutions.

The federal government’s financial contribution to the Apartment Solar Grants initiative will arrive via the Albanese Government’s Community Solar Banks program, an electoral commitment made when the government came into power.

How do I apply for the program?

While the exact application process and program criteria are yet to be announced, this information is soon to be made available when the scheme opens for applications later in the year.

Who does the Apartment Solar Grants program benefit?

Householders in up to 5,000 apartments will soon have the opportunity to harness the benefits of solar energy through this program.

What’s more, it’s designed to address the complexities that apartment dwellers and owners face when attempting to access solar rebates, such as shared roof spaces, multiple owners and tenants, and intricate approval processes, including owners’ corporation approvals.

By making the funding available to owners’ corporations, the program simplifies the process of installing solar panels on apartment buildings and can increase the appeal of both owner-occupied and rented spaces.

This change will significantly increase the number of renters and lower-income Victorians who can enjoy the advantages of affordable solar energy. Solar panels can help residents save money on their energy bills, especially for heating, which is a major energy consumer in homes.

I’m interested in the program. What should I do next?

Currently, the program is in its design phase, with consultations being conducted with key stakeholders. It is expected to open for applications in late 2023. Detailed program information, including eligibility criteria, application processes, and program requirements, will be communicated at that time.

In the meantime, you can check out the other three rebate and grant initiatives currently available in Victoria, including:

  • The battery loans program
